Pantami hails Buhari as ICT’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP surpasses Oil & Gas

The Minister of Communication, Dr Isa Ali-Pantami has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment towards the development of the Information and Communication Technology, ICT, sector.

Mr Pantami made the commendation on the background of a research by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, which placed the country’s GDP growth in the non-oil sector as 91.18% in the second quarter of 2019 as opposed to the 8.82% contributed to total real GP by the oil sector.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that on Tuesday, September 2, the NBC in a report, observed that the country’s GDP grew by 1.94% (year-on-year) in real terms in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the second quarter of 2018, which recorded a growth of 1.50%.

According to the report, the ICT sector contributed 13.85% to total nominal GDP in the second quarter of 2019 which is much higher than 11.22% contributed in the same period in 2018.

A statement signed by the communication ministry’s head of information and press unit, Philomena Oshodin, said the minister expressed happiness over the manner in which the implementation of the administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERGP, was being pursued is remarkable.

These efforts, Mr Pantami said, led to a sustained focus on growing the non-oil sector of the economy, especially ICT and the results witnessed are testimonies of the impact of these efforts.

The minister reiterated the communications ministry’s commitment to the economic diversification efforts of the present administration.

Mr Pantami, therefore, called on all stakeholders to support Mr President’s laudable initiatives aimed at taking Nigeria to the next level.
