PCNI speaks on alleged diversion of education materials in Borno

The Presidential Committee on Northeast Initiative, PCNI, on Thursday said none of its education materials meant for distribution under its school intervention programme in Borno, was diverted.

Amina Maibi, PCNI Administrative Officer in charge of the state, told newsmen in Maiduguri that reports of alleged diversion of the materials, were untrue.

She explained that 15, 500 students and 1, 500 teachers selected from 19 schools and learning centers benefited from the exercise.

Mrs Maibe added that schools bags, exercise and text books, launch boxes, water bottles, torch lights and other instructional materials were distributed to indigent students and teachers.

“The role of the PCNI is to fill gap in the humanitarian interventions. As part of our intervention we distributed bags, books and other kits to students and teachers in selected schools in Maiduguri metropolis.

“Over 15, 500 students and 1, 500 teachers selected from 19 primary and secondary schools, as well as learning centers for displaced students, benefited under the first phase of the exercise,” she said.

Mrs Maibi revealed that another set of 15, 000 students and 1, 500 would be provided with kits under the second phase of the programme, expected to be conducted after the election.

The PCNI official said distribution of the materials was conducted in collaboration with Borno State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, and the participating schools.

According to her, the committee had also trained over 5, 000 teachers on modern teaching techniques and trauma counseling in the state.

Also commenting, Jadida Abbakura, the Principal of the Government Girls Secondary School, Yerwa, lauded the gesture, adding that over 2, 000 students and 98 teachers received bags and kits, while 18 other teachers in the school benefited from the training programmes organized by the PCNI.

One of the beneficiaries, Fatima Bukar, an SSI student of Mafa Learning Center, said she received 10 exercise books, three text books, school bags, lunch box and a torch light.

“I used to the torch light to study at night; the items given assisted our studies,” she said.
