The Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has asked the embattled national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, to either plead for understanding or resign as promised.
Mr Ortom, who is a kinsman of the chairman, recalled that Mr Ayu promised to resign if a northerner emerged as the presidential candidate of the party.
Speaking during the State Executive Council meeting in Government House, Makurdi, on Friday, Mr Ortom said Mr Ayu must resign to restore his honor or plead for understanding and explain why it is important for him to remain as chairman.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that a group of PDP chieftains loyal to the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has been demanding for the resignation of Mr Ayu.
They said unless Mr Ayu resigned, they wouldn’t be participating in the campaign of the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.
Mr Ortom said, “Ayu told the whole world that if a Northern candidate emerges, he will resign. So where is the honor now to continue in office?
“If you don’t want to resign beg for pardon. But it is not enough to say your tenure is four years and you won’t resign as you said it yourself.”
