The Kano State Police Command says it has observed a disturbing and alarming trend of cases of culpable homicide resulting from fighting, stabbing with knives.
Similarly, the command had expressed concerns about high rate of drowning in water, and flood-related death.
In a statement by the command spokesman, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the command noted that the incidents have resulted in the loss of lives, leaving families and communities devastated.
“The Command is deeply concerned about this trend and urges the public to exercise extreme caution and restraint in their daily interactions to prevent such occurrences.
“In this regard, we appeal to parents and guardians to counsel their children and wards on the dangers of engaging in violent behavior and the consequences of such actions,” the statement reads in parts.
“Members of the public are also advised to avoid engaging in physical altercations or arguments that could escalate into violence.
“Refrain from carrying dangerous weapons, especially knives, broken bottles, irons, clubs, etc. Be mindful of their surroundings and avoid situations that could lead to physical harm.
“Avoid traveling or moving around during heavy rainfall and flooding. Stay away from flooded areas and avoid attempting to cross flooded roads or waterways. Report any incidents or suspicious activities to the nearest police station,” the command cautioned the residents.
The command said it is working tirelessly to address the issues and ensure public safety, adding that it had increased patrols and surveillance at high-risk areas.
The statement added that the command is engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to address the root causes of these incidents.
“Finally, the Commissioner of Police, CP Salman Dogo Garba encourages anyone with information on such incidents to report to the nearest police station as your cooperation and support are crucial in preventing loss of lives and maintaining peace in the State.
“In case of emergencies, the Command can be contacted through the following mobile phone numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, and 09029292926,” Mr Kiyawa said.
