A group of Nigerian lawmakers advocating for a parliamentary system of government has launched an essay competition and called for papers on the topic.
The lawmakers, under the auspices of the Parliamentary System Support Group, PSSG, in a statement, urged Nigeria’s vibrant youth to engage in a scholarly examination of the country’s governance system.
The group said the initiative seeks to explore the potential shift from the current presidential system to a home-grown parliamentary system.
The statement said it also aimed to foster a deeper understanding among young Nigerians of the structures that underpin democratic processes and governance efficiency in Nigeria.
According to the statement, the topic for the essay is “As Nigeria marks 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the assertion that a home-grown parliamentary system of government is the best alternative to the current presidential system in Nigeria has been the subject of very many commentaries. Proponents of the parliamentary system argue that the system promotes inclusivity, effective representation, and accountability, all of which are essential for economic, social/political stability and progress. Discuss.”
The organisers said the deadline for the submission of the essays is 12 June, Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
The statement noted that the entries will be evaluated based on originality, relevance to the theme, depth of analysis, and clarity of expression.
“Finalists will be invited to present their essays at a public forum, where they will defend their viewpoints before a live audience and a panel of judges,” the statement added.
The awards to be won include, “monetary prizes for the top 100 participants; educational grants, internships, and mentorship opportunities for a select number of winners to engage with governmental and non-governmental organisations; and publication opportunities for exceptional essays.
