A prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Abubakar Abdullahi Giro is dead.

The cleric, who hailed from Argungu, Kebbi State, died after a brief illness on Wednesday.

Mr Giro reportedly fell ill shortly after preaching at a mosque in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.

In a post on its verified Facebook page, Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah,  JIBWIS, said the revered scholar would be buried on Thursday.

Reacting to death, the immediate-past Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, described the death as shocking and painful.

“I just received the news of the death of Sheikh Abubakar Giro Argungu. Indeed, this kind of death is very painful, but we are certain that Allah doesn’t make mistakes.

“We therefore send our condolences to his immediate family, students, and Islamic leaders across the country.

“We pray Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him eternal peace”, Mr Pantami wrote on his Facebook page.
