There was a violent protest in Kano State on Monday morning, when some policemen attached to the Shahuci Area Command allegedly killed one Saifullahi of Kofar Mata Babban Layi, in the Kano Municipal Local Government Area of the state.
The protest came amidst widespread protests against a the notorious police unit, Special Anti-robbery Squad, SARS.
The Nigerian Government had since disbanded the SARS and created Special Weapon Tactics Team, SWAT to replace the unit.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered the Kano incident happened when a special anti-thuggery police unit, Anti-Daba Squad, trailed a fleeing thug to the area and mistook him for the victim.
Witnesses said the police pounced on Saifullahi while lying on his mattress outside his house on Sunday night.
According to the witnesses, Saifullahi’s father, on hearing his scream, came out to find out what happened, only for him to see the police officers dragging the deceased out of the house to the Area Command.
Other sources, however, told our correspondent that the deceased was actually a thug and had stabbed one of the policemen on patrol around the area, injuring him around the chest region.
“After Sailfullahi and other accomplices stabbed the policeman, they freed two hand-cuffed thugs from the police van. So, when the police arrested him, they started beating him up with clubs and cudgels,” the source disclosed.
Monday morning, it was gathered, the police brought Saifullahi’s corpse to the family house, a development that angered the neighbours to take to the street in protest for the alleged brutality.
The angry neighbors, comprising mostly male and female youth, took the corpse and dumped at the entrance of the Area Command, about 500 meters away from Saifullahi’s family house.
The protesters fired fireworks and enchanted different slogans.
Some of the protesters held placard with different inscriptions such as: “We call on IGP Area Command is killing us at Kofar Mata”, “Justice for Saifullahi”, among others.
It, however, took the intervention of some community elders to bring the situation under control.
A resident of the area, who preferred anonymity, expressed shock about the incident, describing the deceased as a decent and innocent person who had never engaged in thuggery or criminality.
“Saifullahi is innocent. He had never engaged in criminality. In fact, he has an acute mental impairment. How do you expect such a person to engage in thuggery?
“We are tired of this brutality. Enough is enough. We call on the Federal Government to do justice on this young person,” he said.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, said the command was gathering information on the incident, saying that the command would issue a statement in that regard.
