A former spokesman for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Kenneth Okonkwo, has described President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide address on the ongoing #endbadgovernance protest as annoying and uninspiring.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mr Tinubu addressed the nation on Sunday and appealed to the youths to leave the streets and embrace dialogue.
He warned the protesters not to allow themselves to be used by ethnic bigots and the opposition political parties.
The speech has, however, received mixed reactions from a cross-section of Nigerians.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday, Mr Okonkwo said instead of making the uninspiring broadcast, the president should ve ignored calls for him to address Nigerians.
He also dismissed diversionary tactics deployed by the supporters of the current administration, insisting that Nigerians are hungry.
“They [the APC] unleashed the greatest protest in this country. And in all conscience, I won’t say they are extremely violent. When they protested against Goodluck Jonathan, because of the N20 naira increase in fuel.
“Today, they say, [purportedly] have removed the fuel subsidy that landed the price of fuel from a 195 to N1000.
“In real markets, in Lagos, it is even sold at 1,200, and the funny thing is that it is not even available.
“People have to spend hours in the filing station to pay N900, and it is not even available, what a government.
“Now, the people are protesting for hunger and hardship, deprivation, and degradation. And the president was compelled to speak.
“I wish they did not compel him. If I were a media aide, I would have preferred there was no speech at all because a bad speech is worse than no speech at all.
“…The speech was contradictory, annoying, and disheartening…“In addition to the speech being empty and very annoying, it was even leaked before the day,” he said.
