Rabi Musa Saulawa has been elected as president of Jam’iyyar Matan Arewa, defeating her lone opponent, Aishatu Ismail.
Established in 1963, the organization has supported and championed the cause of Northern women in the areas education, maternal health, social welfare, among others.
In a keenly contested election organised at Hotel 17, Kaduna on Sunday, Ms Saulawa scored 80 votes to beat Ms Ismail, a former minister of Women Affairs & Youth Development, who polled 79 votes.
Eleven delegates each from 15 Northern states participated in the election.
In her acceptance speech after taking the oath of office, Ms Saulawa promised to unite Northern women and provide support for them.
