Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday threw out a bill that sought for the establishment of South East Development Commission, SEDC.

The commission was intended to serve as a prototype to one established for the Niger Delta people, as well as the latest North East Development Commission.

Both Niger Delta Development Commission and North East Development Commission were established to take care of the peculiar challenges of oil spillage and insurgency in the zones respectively.

But when the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara put a voice vote on the viability of the bill, the lawmakers recorded a resounding shout of “nay.”

Some of the members who contributed to the debate said the timing of the bill was wrong and adequate consultations were not made before it was presented for consideration.

Even before the speaker put the voice vote, the House had earlier went into a rowdy session over the consideration of the bill.

Lawmakers mainly from the South East region protested in the chambers over the initial withdrawal of the bill. But they convinced the House to re-enlist it for consideration.
