Senate urges Nigerian govt to immotalise designer of Nigerian flag, Akinkunmi

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to immortalise MrTaiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian national flag.

This followed the adoption of a motion for state burial and immortalisation of Taiwo Akinkunmi the designer of the Nigerian national flag at plenary on Tuesday by Sen. Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo).

Presenting the motion, Mr Alli said Mr Akinkunmi was a remarkable Nigerian,whose creative mind was behind the design of Nigerian national flag.

“Akinkunmi passed on Aug 29 as a national hero, it is only befitting that he be remembered and honored based on his legacy for generations to come because he played a pivotal role in creating the iconic symbol that represents Nigeria as a great nation and has been a source of pride for all Nigerians since independence,” he said.

He said in recognition of his noble contribution, the 7th Assembly passed a resolution urging the federal government to place him on monthly salary.

“This was honoured, graciously approved by the Federal Government and paid till he passed-on.

“Further aware that Taiwo Akinkunmi’s design of the Nigerian national flag is not just a piece of cloth, it represents the hopes and dreams of an entire nation.

” It is a powerful symbol of our unity in diversity, our resilierice, and our commitment to a shared future. Immortalizing him and granting him a state burial is a demonstration of the respect and honor that Nigeria accords to her heroes, living or late,” he said.

Senate thereafter observed a minute silence in honour Mr Akinkunmi and prayed for the repose of his soul.
