A former governor of Ekiti State and member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that he would only support a presidential candidate from the southern part of the country in 2023.
Governors of the 19 Southern states had in July 2021 insisted that the 2023 Presidency must come from the southern region but the party’s presidential primaries produced Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, as its candidate.
Writing on his Twitter handle, Mr Fayose said it would be unfair to allow another Northerner become president after Muhammadu Buhari.
The former governor who is an ally of River State governor, Nyesom Wike, then asked Nigerians to “await details soon”.
He tweeted: “The PDP Constitution provides for a rotational Presidency. Section 3(c) provides that the Party shall pursue its aims & objectives by “adhering to the policy of the rotation & zoning of Party & Public elective offices in pursuance of the principle of equity, justice and fairness.
“The current President of Nigeria is a 2-term Northern Presidency, thus implying that it MUST be a Southern Presidency in 2023 or NOTHING. Awa ‘South’ lo kan’. Nigerians should await details soon.”
Commenting under Mr Fayose’s post, a Senator who represented Kaduna Central and PDP stalwart, Shehu Sani, reminded him that delegates don’t read the constitution, but money.
“Calm down Big Bro; delegates no de read constitution, na mint dem de read,” he said.
