Omagbemi Says Players Are In Cameroun To Win Cup

Defending Champion, the Super Falcons, have vowed to beat Mali in today’s Group B opening fixture of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) taking place in Cameroun.

At the championship, Nigeria is defending the title she won two years in Windhoek, Namibia, after defeating Cameroun 2-0 in the final match. The victory by the team coached by Edwin Okon, was lifted the seventh time.

The new handler and a former player, Coach Florence Omagbemi, has already expressed optimism that nothing will stop the girls from winning the crown.

“All that we need to do is to keep up our game. The trophy is ours to win because that is why we are here in the first place. We are going to handle the Malians very well in tomorrow’s (today) game.

“Against the Ghanaians, we will handle them as we have always done in the past. The Black Queens have always been our rival since the beginning of the women soccer in Africa. They equally have talented players just as much, as we have, but certainly we will overcome them by God’s grace,” she said

The former Super Falcon’s captain, who said the Camerounians and the Ghanaians were threats to their ambition of winning the cup, said, “Each match will be taken as it comes as we do not want to underrate any team in order not to suffer any upset.”

However, some of the players The Guardian spoke to yesterday agreed that even though they respect the Malians, they would put everything in order to ensure that the victory comes their way in today’s opening match.
