A student leader of the newly-renamed Maitama Sule University, Kano, Adnan Tudunwada, has been released by the State Security Service, SSS, in Kano.

Mr Tudunwada was invited by the service on Sunday morning, following a plan by the university students to protest the renaming of the university from Northwest University to Maitama Sule University, Kano.

The student activist, who also reports for DAILY NIGERIAN, had earlier expressed his disapproval of the decision but recanted his position on Friday night.

Mr Tudunwada also dissociated himself from any protest against the government’s decision.

The state director of the SSS, Alhassan Mohammed, said the service neither arrested nor detained the student activist.

“Adnan is our friend. We have good understanding with students. We had useful discussions and they were allowed to go,” Mr Mohammed said.

Also commenting on the issue, Mr Tudunwada said: “It was an invitation to the SSS Headquarters. Around 8:10pm yesterday, I received a call from an SSS officer that I was invited for a meeting with the state Director.

“I honoured the invitation this morning at around 10:30am. I met with the Director and two Assistant Directors in charge of security and intelligence. It is all about a planned protest by some students over the renaming of Northwest University.

“We discussed the issue critically and they urged me to call students to order for the interest of peace. The Director has shown and highlighted me the implication of such protest to the peaceful coexistence of Kano State. I was allowed to go after this discussion that lasted for two hours.

“I reiterate, nobody arrested me. Let me also assure the general public and all authorities concerned that I have not in any way organized such a protest.

“I am wholeheartedly against it for the interest of peace and security. Northwest University is Maitama Sule University, Kano. We should accept this in good faith,” he added.
