National Stadium, Lagos.

Some stakeholders in Nigerian sports say they have uncovered a plot by a group of businessmen and politicians to scuttle the Federal Government’s decision to hand over the National Stadium, Surulere to Lagos State.

Although they did not name the businessmen or the politicians, the stakeholders allege that the group has already finalized plans to use the National Assembly to force Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung to suspend the process of handing over the stadium to Lagos State.

One of the stakeholders, who pleaded anonymity, alleged that some members of the House of Representatives have been brought into the plot, adding that some powerful interests, who had been seeking to take over the stadium on concession, were already working at different levels to scuttle the agreement between the Federal Government and Lagos State.

He sad, “ a motion to stop the process of handing over the stadium will be moved today at the House of Representatives. The motion has been prepared, and a lawmaker has been detailed to move it accordingly.

“The same people worked against the Lagos State Government when it initiated the plan to take over the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Had the TBS been handed over to Lagos, the square would have been given total transformation.

“They are only targeting the parcels of land within and around the National Stadium complex. They do not have any plan to really redevelop the facility.”

The Guardian recalls that Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung disclosed that the Federal Government would hand over the dilapidated National Stadium to Lagos State for resuscitation and proper management the way it gave the stadia in Kaduna, Enugu and Calabar to the various states’ governments.
