Issa Aremu, a labour leader and governorship candidate of Labour Party in Kwara, on Monday, cautioned Nigerian media against undue publicity of activities of the Boko Haram.

Mr Aremu gave the warning at the Media Parliament of Kwara council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Ilorin.

The labour leader, while reacting to the purported invasion of the offices of Daily Trust Newspaper in Abuja, Lagos and Borno by the military, said any undue publicity of the activities of the group could be counterproductive to the fight against insurgency in the North East.

He described the Sunday’s lead story of the Daily Trust newspaper as unprofessional.

According to him, the report disclosed security confidentiality.

The governorship hopeful warned journalists and media organisations not to be giving the terrorists unnecessary promotion and partner with Federal Government to tame the scourge of the deadly terrorists.

He stressed the need for media professionals to be conscious of their reports, saying that partnering government to curb insecurity would guarantee rapid development.

He said “there is serious need for the media to be careful of activities going on in Borno. Global forces are at work and they want to penetrate Nigeria to take advantage of the endowed mineral resources in the region.

“The media as the fourth estate of realm should not be a platform to promote self-destruction and willing tool for destruction of the security.”

Mr Aremu, who lamented backwardness and infrastructure decay in Kwara, pledged to restore the lost glory of the state through his Five-Point Agenda and Economic Blueprint if given the opportunity.

He explained that Kwara as one of the first created states in 1967 could not march up with its contemporaries like Lagos, Kano and Rivers in terms of development and Gross Domestic Product, GDP, rate.
