The Enugu Police command has said it has arrested five suspects that were allegedly involved in breaking into phone stores and snatching of cell phones from their victims in Enugu.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement in Enugu that 17 phones and a laptop computer had been recovered from the suspects.
Mr Amaraizu said that the suspects were terrorising their victims along Texaco and Liberty area of Abakpa axis and New Haven axis of the state capital.
He said the arrest of the suspects in the New Haven Division followed a tip-off.
“It was gathered that the suspects had allegedly conspired and broken into a phone shop at Chime Avenue in New Haven axis of Enugu in the midnight and carted away apple I-phones and laptops.
“Following the report, operatives swung into action and through intelligence information, nabbed three suspects and recovered 17 of the stolen phones and a laptop.
“However, diligent investigations led to the arrest of two other suspects on Oct. 8 thereby bringing the number of the suspects to five, while manhunt has been intensified for the arrest of the fleeing ones,’’ he said.
The Police Spokesman gave the names of the suspects as: Charles Chekwube, Kelechukwu Okpara , Eneh Ifeanyi, Anih Emeka and Okpara Chisom ( female).
According to him, the suspects are helping the police in their investigations, whom, he added, have blamed bad company and peer influence for their actions.
“Charles Chekwube said his friends had suggested that they should go and break into a phone shop as well as lay siege to their targets in Abakpa and its environs to steal phones from unsuspecting members of the public,’’ he added.
