The Kuje Prison, Abuja on Tuesday night came under attack by suspected terrorists.
A security source told DAILY NIGERIAN that the terrorists began shooting sporadically around 10 pm and later threw explosives in order to gain access into the yard.
According to the source, the Nigerian military and police have been despatched to reinforce prison security.
The source said many prisoners were freed by the attackers, but DCP Abba Kyari and his co-accused are still in the prison.
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that calm has been restored at Correctional Centre.
A statement by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, AD Umar, disclosed that immediately after the terrorists attack, men of the Armed Squad of the Service and other security agencies attached to the custodial centre, were swiftly mobilised for a response operation.
“Calm has been restored to the facility and the situation is under control, ” part of the statement reads.
According to the Correction Service spokesperson, details of the response operation by troops will be made available soon.
