Thugs attack Ondo prison, release inmates

Suspected thugs on Thursday invaded the National Correctional Service Centre in Okitipupa, Ondo State, forcefully releasing 58 of the inmates.

It was gathered that the hoodlums destroued one vehicle and several other items in the premises of the prison.

Meanwhile, prison inmates at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre have set the facility ablaze, in a bid to break away, just as soldiers and policemen have been stationed to foil the operation.

The Nation learnt that the prison authorities notified the police and the military authorities for a backup.

An anonymous eyewitness said, “I can see them from my house at the moment. Soldiers and policemen have arrived. I saw prisoners throwing stones and I saw fire.”

There was also report of fire outbreak at the prison facility.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi who spoke to our reporter said; “Yes, there is fire outbreak there but we are investigating and our men are on the ground with fire fighters.

“Area Commander, Area A and Commnader MOPOL 2 Keffi road VI and men are there. No cause for alarm.”
