A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the detention of the director of a pirate radio station, Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in Kuje prison.
Kanu was arraigned this morning before Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court on fresh treason charges by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Counsel to DSS Barr. Mohammed Diri and counsel Kanu, Chuks Muoma (SAN) argued for and against custody of the suspect respectively.
Kanu’s lawyer, however, vehemently opposed his client’s incarceration by the DSS.
Barr. Muoma said Kanu had been detained for three months without granting anyone access to him, and therefore asked the court to send the accused person to prison so that his family could have access to him.
He prayed the court to remand Kanu in prison custody instead of the DSS detention facilities.
Counsel to DSS cited security concerns in advancing his argument that Kanu be left in the hands of the DSS.
After listening to the two parties, the judge ruled that the defendant be kept in the custody of the Nigeria Prison Service in Kuje.
