Turkish drones intercepted over Greek island in the Aegean

Greek forces intercepted two Turkish drones overflying the small Greek island of Kinaros in the Aegean Sea in the early hours of Friday.

The semi-official ANA news agency reported on the basis of information from the military.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently warned Greece with the words: “We could come suddenly at night.’’

Kinaros, which lies around 85 kilometres off the Turkish coast at Bodrum, is home to just one family that keeps livestock.

According to the Greek authorities, Turkish jets have overflown Greek territory 163 times since the start of the year and violated Greek airspace over the Aegean 5,774 times.

Most of the flights are conducted during daylight hours.

The European Union has repeatedly condemned actions of this kind carried out by Turkey, which was seen as a serious violation of national sovereignty.

Ankara has questioned the status of a number of inhabited and uninhabited Greek islands in the region.

The two countries have come close to conflict repeatedly over recent years, and tensions in the region are at a new high.
