Unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, have killed an Islamic cleric, Ibrahim Iyiorji, in Ebonyi State.
The cleric was said to have been shot twice at close range in the presence of his wife at their residence in Isu, Onicha Local Government Area, on Friday.
DAILY NIGERIAN gathered the assailants, who were heavily armed, stormed the residence of the cleric on three motorbikes around 7 p.m.
A family source told DAILY NIGERIAN that the victim was rushed to the Federal Medical Center, Abakaliki, where he underwent surgeries to remove the bullets but died on Monday.
“It was just him and his wife that were in the house when six men in masks and armed to the teeth arrived at their house in three motor bikes at about 7 p.m.,” a source said.
Narrating how the ugly incident happened, the source said, “they placed the nozzle of the gun on his wife and dragged the cleric into the parlor and commanded him to lie down.
“He obeyed in the helpless situation. Then one of the men shot him in the belly at point-blank range.
“While he cried for help in pain, another one of them, asked him “so you never die?”
“Then he pulled the trigger again, this time at his right shoulder; perhaps he was aiming for the chest but missed.
“They spared the wife afterwards and zoomed off,” the source added.
The cleric has since been buried in his home.
Police did not speak on the incident at the time of filing this report.
