Parallel state congresses of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have taken place in Kano, with Abdullahi Abbas and Ahmadu Danzago emerging as factional chairmen of the party.
While the faction led by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje held its congress at Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, the faction jointly led by former Senator Ibrahim Shekarau and Rep. Sha’aban Sharada held its own at Janguza on the outskirt of Kano.
The Shekarau-led faction had earlier gathered at Sani Abacha Youth Center to hold the congress, but police later dispersed them.
The Returning Officer of the Ganduje-led faction, Auwal Abdullahi, said the congress started at the indoor stadium after screening the contestants.
Speaking during the congress at Sani Abacha Stadium, Mr Ganduje declared that any other state congress of the APC, not the one being held at Sani Abacha Stadium in the state is illegal.
He said, “some disgruntled elements may hold another congress somewhere else. As far as APC is concerned, the Congress being held today, at this venue is the recognised by the national body.
“The information we have is that the only APC Congress is the one taking place now, at this venue. This venue is the place where APC Congress is holding,” said Mr Ganduje.
He urged the part members to be of good conduct and ensure a hitch-free exercise.
Speaking after the Shekarau-led congress, Professor Mohammed Sani Bello, the Presiding Officer sent by APC national headquarters, Abuja, said the election was conducted peacefully.
He announced that Mr Danzago emerged as the winner after delegates from all the 44 Local Government areas voted for him.
