The United States’ secretary of state, Michael Pompeo, has put a call through to the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, to affirm the international community’s commitment to free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.

Mr Atiku, who made the disclosure on his twitter handle on Friday, said: “Earlier today I received a call from US Secretary of State, @SecPompeo, who reaffirmed the international community’s commitment to free and fair elections in Nigeria.”

He also said that he was, “Wishing you all a peaceful election, wherever you are. God bless Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, President Clinton, who was supposed to visit the country to witness the Wednesday’s signing of peace pact between the political candidates, President Muhammadu Buhari, Atiku Abubakar and others had to cancel his visit, saying that his visit could be politicised.

He had, however, put through a telephone call to President Buhari during which he wished Nigeria well.

A statement from Femi Adesina, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, had said. “President Clinton, who regretted his inability to visit the country to witness the signing of the final peace accord before the general elections, wished Nigeria well as her citizens go to the polls.”
