The Medical Outreach initiative of the former Sokoto state governor, Aliyu Magatakarda has offered free treatments to 1,833 persons suffering from various eye diseases in the Sokoto North Senatorial District.
Mr Wamakko, a servung senator, disclosed this in a statement by his media aide, Bashir Mani in Sokoto on Wednesday.
The Senator noted that the turnout of beneficiaries for the eight-day exercise surpassed the initial target of 1,000 by the organisers.
Mr Wamakko, who spoke through his Director of Administration, Al-Mustapha Abubakar, promised to sustain the programme in order to further alleviate the suffering of the people of his constituency.
The aide quoted the leader of the five-man medical team that conducted the outreach, Dr Ubani Chinemeze, as having expressed satisfaction at the success recorded during the exercise.
He said more than 70 per cent of the beneficiaries of the programme suffered trachoma, glaucoma, cornear ulcer and allergic conjunctivitis, among others.
According to him, the remaining 30 per cent of the patients who had refractive errors like myopes, hyperopes and presoyoes were given drugs and eyeglasses to aid their sights.
Mr Ubani, however, said other patients who required surgeries were referred to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.
He called for engagement of more eye Specialists in the country so that many more eye patients could access available health facilities and get cured of their ailment.
Some of the beneficiaries- 80-year-old Alhaji Muhammad Namadina, 40-year-old Hajiya Asma’u Abubakar and Alhaji Isa Abdullahi commended the senator for the gesture.
