The minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu, has conveyed President Muhammadu Buhari’s support and goodwill to the effort by ECOWAS through West Africa Power Pool, WAPP, to ensure that countries in the sub-region are energy sufficient.
Mr Aliyu stated this at the opening of the 33 Session of ECOWAS WAPP ministerial meeting in Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic.
The minister said Nigeria is fully committed to addressing electricity challenges, with the ongoing investment in grid expansion and upgrade at home, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari is also committed to the sub-regional effort to make electricity integrated and accessible to the people.
He also said the country will work with agencies relevant to the WAPP project, including the ministries of Finance and Defence to address challenges delaying the project.
The minister of Power and his Defence counterpart represented Nigeria at the foundation laying ceremony of the Niger side of the regional project, flagged off on Tuesday by the President of Niger Mohamed Bazoum and the President of Ghana Nana Akufo Addo – who is the current chairman of ECOWAS – at Gondu Banda.
