A group, North-east Progressive Youth Forum, has through its weight of support on Senator Danjuma Goje over his ambition of becoming the next Senate President, saying that Mr Goje’s wealth of unchallenged experience is second to none among the contenders.
During a press briefing on Thursday, the chairman of the forum, Rima E. Tsokwa, noted that the position of the Senate President in the Nigerian growing democracy requires a good, incontrovertible democrat with passion and vision like Mr Goje.
According to the group, Mr Goje is to APC in the North-East what Tinubu is to APC in the South-West.
The forum, therefore, called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to look at the roles of each of the contenders and deduce who among them will be a better leader.
“It is not in doubt that, all party leaders are important, but we also know that some party leaders are more important than others. A closer look at their individual contributions and influence in the zone shows that Goje is to APC in the North-East what Tinubu is to APC in the South-West.
“Despite being a key actor in the North-East Politics, Sen. M.D. Goje have nothing in his table unlike his counterpart from the South-West that brought the Vice President, the Party Chairman, Director General, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Director General, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeriaetcyet still want to fill in the Senate President, Speaker and their Deputies.
“If this is allowed, Bola Tinubu will be the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by proxy.Unlike the other contestants from the North-East with or without them APC would have still won their states. The case is different with Gombe State,” the group stated.
The group, however, commended the APC for zoning the Senate President position to the North-East, saying that such decision was long overdue.
“We have six geopolitical zones and six key positions ranging from the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria down to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative. For equity, justice and fairplay, each of the six geo-political zones should be ably represented.
“The president is from the North-West, the Vice President is from the South-West, the Senate President zoned to North-East, while the three zones, that is, North-Central, South-South, South-East deserve the distribution of the under listed offices, Deputy Senate President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.
“It will be unfair to zone the office of the Speaker to the South-West leaving North – Central, South-South and South-East out of the zoning arrangement.
“Sequel to the above, there should be religious balancing, owing to the fact that all the contenders to the office of the Senate president are all Muslims and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila is also a Muslim from the south-west.
“The Speaker ought to be a Christian and not from the South-West who already have Vice President in the sharing formula of the six key positions of leadership inthis country.
“However, we wish to re-iterate our position which we believe will strengthen our growing democracy that the contestants should be given a level playing ground being party leaders from the North-East geopolitical zone,” the group added.
