Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has confirmed the arrest of social media influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Very Dark Man, VDM.
Recall that Mr Otse was reportedly arrested on Thursday after visiting a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank to complain over unauthorised deductions from his mother’s account.
The arrest has sparked outrage and protest across the social media space.
Prominent celebrities and opposition leaders, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have demanded the immediate release of the activist.
Confirming the arrest during an interview with the BBC News Pidgin, EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, said the influencer was taken into custody following complaints from several petitioners.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Mr Oyewale said.
When asked if the case was connected to GT Bank, Mr Oyewale noted that the petitions were from different individuals and the agency owed them a duty of protection.
He added that the commission was planning to arraign the social media activist.
He stated: “We will release him when he meets the bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding.”
