The Euro 2020 football championship was postponed last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, being moved for this summer.
UEFA has officially confirmed that the tournament will be held from June 11 to July 11 this year across 12 locations around Europe.
There will be 24 teams in action, each one fighting for the title. Of course, only a few have been made top favorites at the moment according to experts and bookies.
Before the tournament is underway, we’re going to take a look at the top 3 teams that will surely fight for the title.
France, England, and Belgium have been identified as the top trophy favorites, although others will surely join in on the fight.
England
In the 2016 edition of the Euros, England barely managed to pass its group and was defeated by Iceland in the Round of 16. Fans were disappointed by the direction English football was heading which resulted with the sacking of Roy Hodgson not long after. Gareth Southgate was appointed as his successor, and he made the necessary changes to make England dominant again.
After a stellar performance at the 2018 World Cup, England comes flying in as a favorite for the Euro Cup 2020.
Bookie and experts widely believe that Southgate’s team has the quality to challenge for the title, making England a joint-favorite for the trophy.
With players such as Kane, Sterling, Rashford, and Jadon Sancho up front, England is stocked on talent for sure.
It remains to be seen if other pieces will click once again for a deep England run at the European Championships.
France
France was narrowly edged out in the 2016 Euros final by Portugal, then went on to claim the World Cup title 2 years later. The French are no short on young talent and play the best football in the world right now. Hopes are high for Les Bleus to win the Euros and complete a rare feat – being both World and European champs at the same time.
France has been made the top favorite for the trophy along with England. Both are given nearly identical shots at the title, and we couldn’t agree more. Kylian Mbappe is almost a lock for the Golden Boot, and the French lack no talent in any other area as well.
No matter what happens, we fully expect Les Bleus to fight for the title till the very end.
Belgium
Belgium didn’t have the luck to play in the World Cup or Euros finals recently, but the team was just short of reaching them. That’s why experts believe that Belgium will make a splash at the Euro 2020, finally reaching that elusive final match.
A lot of it will depend on the form of Eden Hazard who has had an abysmal few years at Real Madrid. His form or injury status are always up in the air, but if he performs to the best of his abilities, you can expect Belgium to play for the trophy.
Darkhorse Favorites
Besides the top 3 teams, experts believe that Germany and Portugal will also challenge for the title. Spain and the Netherlands are darkhorse favorites too along with Italy, with all teams possessing the quality for a deep run in the tournament.
While doubts will be cast over Germany’s chances, Portugal enters the Euro 2020 as a reigning champion. Cristiano Ronaldo is the joint-top scorer in the history of the Euros, just like Platini. That record will almost surely be broken at the Euro 2020, and with Ronaldo in their team, Portugal can go a long way in the tournament.
