The Kano State governor-elect, Abba Yusuf, has vowed to review the ongoing staff recruitment by the outgoing administration of Abdullahi Ganduje, describing the exercise as “job racketeering and nepotism”.
Mr Yusuf stated this in his Workers’ Day message, as contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, on Monday.
According to Mr Yusuf, the outgoing government has engaged in reckless recruitment that is riddled with nepotism, stressing that his administration, when inaugurated on May 29, would revisit the process.
He said his government would make sure that credible recruitment process is out in 0lace for all citizens with the required qualification to apply.
“On the current job racketeering and nepotism in staff recruitment which the outgoing government is recklessly conducting, the Governor-elect said his administration will revisit all the wrong doings and ensure a credible recruitment process is placed for all citizens with the required qualifications to compete.
“We shall not allow the civil service to be misguided by corruption and nepotism, we must check the job racketeering in Kano state as a priority to restore the lost glory of the service,” he said.
Mr Yusuf also congratulated workers from both public and private sectors in the State on the occasion of Workers’ Day 2023.
The governor-elect, who resigned from the state civil service over a decade ago served for more than 20 years in various capacities across the state’s water sector.
He said workers are the key to delivering good governance under any democratic dispensation, as such, they deserve to be commended for their sacrifice to humanity.
He noted that Kano workers in the State Civil Service and private sector have demonstrated audacity in the face of their diminishing purchasing powers to maintain high standards of service delivery and productivity.
The statement added that, “Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf assured the State civil servants of Improved welfare including prompt payment of salaries and pension by the incoming administration of the NNPP.
“Engr. Abba said the leadership of the incoming government is quite aware of the problems facing the State civil servants including unfavourable working conditions and inadequate manpower which have been noted for redress.”
The governor-elect said his government would be committed to reforming the civil service as part of the efforts towards strengthening the system for effective and efficient service delivery.
“As contained in our blueprint, we will establish Training Institute for the civil servants to be up to date with the global best practices,” the statement said.
