UPDATED: Workers trapped as 21-storey building collapses in Lagos

Some artisans have been feared trapped after a 21-storey building, said to be under construction, collapsed in Lagos.

The building, said to be under construction, caved in Monday afternoon along Gerrard Road, Ikoyi.

Possible cause of collapse and number of persons feared trapped are yet to be ascertained.

Emergency responders say they are mobilising men and rescue equipment to site of the collapsed building.

Dr Olufemi, Oke-Osanyintolu, Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday afternoon that the agency had activated its emergency response plan to deal with the disaster.

“All first responders are en route to secure the scene while the heavy-duty equipment and life detection equipment have been dispatched,” he said.

At least 50 people are reportedly trapped under the rubble after a 21-storey building collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos State.
The building, located at 20, Gerrard Road, collapsed around 3 p.m. on Monday.

However, the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development says its rescue team were struggling to clear gridlock to access the collapsed building site few metres away.

“LASG rescue operation underway. Team struggling to clear gridlock at 200 metres from collapse site,” Mukaila Sanusi, Spokesman of the ministry told NAN on Monday Afternoon.
