WTO: Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment will propel Nigeria’s growth in world economy – Tumsah

A former Interim National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Tijjani Tumsah, has said that the appointment of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, WTO, will propel Nigeria’s growth in the world economy.

Mr Tumsah, who stated this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, described the former Minister of Finance as a worthy ambassador of Nigeria.

According to him, the pedigree and experience of Mrs Okonjo-Iweala will be useful toward reforming the WTO.

The APC chieftain also said that her appointment gives hope to reward merit and exceptional service to the father land.

Mr Tumsah joined the family, friends and well-wishers of Mrs Okonjo-Iweala in wishing her a successful and productive tenure at the world trade body.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his tremendous support toward the emergence of Mrs Okonjo-Iweala as the 7th Director-General of the WTO.

Mr Tumsah urged the Nigerian women and others around the world to support Mrs Okonjo-Iweala to discharge her responsibilities diligently.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala was appointed the WTO’s Director-General by the General Council meeting on February 15, after nine months of selection process.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, who became the first woman and the first African to be chosen as Director-General of WTO, is expected to take up the role on March 1, with renewable term set to expire on Aug. 31, 2025.
