Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State said that his government will ensure that local arm of government functions effectively as a unit of governance that is closer to the people.
The governor stated this on Friday at the Government House Damaturu while presenting flags to the 17 All Progressives Congress, APC, local government chairmanship candidates contesting in the upcoming local council election slated for 27 February.
“We want to end a situation whereby when you go to local governments are deserted.
“We will hand over to local government chairmen the trust to run the affairs of their councils.
“If local government areas are empowered to operate freely and function, the pressure on the state government will be reduced,” Governor Buni said.
He also said Yobe State Government would support Local Government Councils so that they could keep the wheel of governance moving at the local level.
The governor also charged the 17 local government council chairmanship election candidates of the APC to unite the people and work for the people to ensure that at the grassroots level governance is moving on effectively.
