Yobe State Government has partnered the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for the training of the customized Tricycle Ambulance riders.
Recall that the state government had of recent purchased the ambulances for transporting pregnant women to nearest health facilities across the state.
Speaking during the training, the state commissioner of Health, Dr. Mohammed Gana said the exercise was meant to equip the trainees with the rudiments of traffic as well as proper handling of the tricycles.
“The essence of the emergency transport scheme is to reduce the needless death and illnesses of pregnant women and children below the age of five years.
“It can also be used in transporting accidents and other illness that are of emergency nature that why we call it emergency transport scheme,” Mr Gana added.

The commissioner disclosed that the government decided to embark on the scheme with a view to tackling some delays which experts identified as the major causes of maternal mortality in the society.
He said: “When analyses was made on the contributory factor of maternal mortality generally everywhere three dealings were identified, those dealings are delay in deciding to seek care, delay in accessing care which include transportation and a mobility and the delay in providing the care.”
Also speaking, the FRSC’s Sector Commander, Yobe State Command, Mohammed Hamzat who was represented by the Deputy Corp Commandant, Ezekiel Son-Na-Allah, commended the state government for initiating the training, especially as it involves saving lives of pregnant women.
“It is one thing to acquire a vehicle and it is another thing to take care of that vehicle.
“We will try to exposed you people to defensive driving, basic vehicles maintenance with a view to achieving the life span of those vehicles,” Mr Hamzat said.
