The Jigawa Government says it is adopting settlement- to- settlement approach in vaccinating over 300,000 animals this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Director, Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Abdullahi Haruna, stated this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Dutse on Friday.
“Unlike previous years when herdsmen and other livestock owners were gathered in one place with all their animals for the vaccination exercise, this year, the approach is different,
“This year, because of lockdown and social distancing orders, we decided to conduct settlement-to-settlement and house-to-house vaccination in all the local government areas.
“This is part of the precautionary measures we adopted to prevent spread of COVID-19 by avoiding crowd and congestion during the exercise,” Mr Haruna said.
The director further told NAN that over 300,000 animals, consisting of 200,000 cattle, 100,000 sheep and goats, as well as 1,000 dogs, had been targeted.
According to him, the cattle will be vaccinated against Contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia, CBPP, while the sheep and goats will be vaccinated against Peste de Petites Prominante, PPR, while dogs will be vaccinated against Rabies
Mr Haruna added that the state government had provided adequate vaccines and logistics support for smooth conduct of the exercise.
The director called on all livestock breeders and keepers of pets, to ensure that their animals were vaccinated during the exercise that would continue up till the end of May.
