Aisha Buhari inaugurates campaign against Gender-Based Violence

The first lady, Aisha Buhari, joined members of her staff to inaugurate a campaign against Gender-Based Violence, GBV, especially the rising cases of rape, domestic violence against women and girls.

Mrs Buhari was speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during sensitisation campaign to create awareness on the danger of silence in the face of harassment.

“I am delighted to lead my staff for a sensitisation campaign on 16-days of activism against gender based violence,’’ she said.

The first lady, while calling for action against the perpetrators of the act, urged stakeholders to make concerted efforts towards eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls.

“I call on government, religious and community leaders to ensure zero tolerance on gender based violence and other harmful practices against,” she said.

Buhari said stakeholders must ensure increased awareness to safeguard women and girls as well as the survivors of sexual harassment.

“The campaign was organised to draw the attention of stakeholders on issues associated with female genital mutilation, rape and other forms of violence against women and girls.”

The the UN has set aside Nov. 25 to Dec. 10 to commemorate International day for the elimination of violence against women.
