Prison inmates at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre have set the facility ablaze, in a bid to break away, just as soldiers and policemen have been stationed to foil the operation.
The Nation learnt that the prison authorities notified the police and the military authorities for a backup.
An anonymous eyewitness said, “I can see them from my house at the moment. Soldiers and policemen have arrived. I saw prisoners throwing stones and I saw fire.”
There was also report of fire outbreak at the prison facility.
Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi who spoke to our reporter said; “Yes, there is fire outbreak there but we are investigating and our men are on the ground with fire fighters.
“Area Commander, Area A and Commnader MOPOL 2 Keffi road VI and men are there. No cause for alarm.”
Spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, in Lagos, Rotimi Oladokun said there was no cause for alarm, adding that a statement would be issued soon.
He said: “There was fire on a part of the correctional centre but it has been contained. It did not affect the inmates in any way. There is no jail break and all is fine. We will issue a statement soon.”
