In early hours of yesterday, Binta Safiyanu, the first wife of a lawmaker representing Musawa constituency in the Katsina state House of Assembly, Yunusa Jikamshi was said to have died following an intake of herbal concoction.
Reports trickling down shows that Mrs Safiyanu, a mother of six, had died after allegedly drinking herbal concoction to boost the flow of her breast milk a week after being delivered of a set of twins.
It was learnt that after being delivered of the babies, Mrs Safiyanu’s breast milk could not flowing as expected, that made her co-wives to persuade her to drink the concoction.
An insider said Mrs Safiyanu’s co-wives allegedly assured her that the concoction would enhance the flow of the milk.
It was also gathered that the deceased directed a woman identified as Sakina to prepare the concoction for her, and reportedly started vomiting shortly after taking the herbal drink.
She was subsequently rushed to Musawa General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead, and has since been buried according to Islamic rites.
The incident was initially reported at the Musawa police station from where it was transferred to the state criminal investigation, Katsina bureau, for further investigation.
Mrs Sakina is however being detained by the police.
When contacted, the spokesman for the state police command, Isah Gambo, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was in progress to unravel the real circumstances surrounding Bintu’s death.
However, the lawmaker could not be reached for comment as he was said to be out of Katsina at the time of filing this report.
