The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged the newly appointed Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Dayo Mobereola, to direct relevant agencies to ensure free flow of traffic in the state, while condemning the constant gridlock in the state.
While adopting a motion moved by Hon. Moshood Olanrewaju Oshun, representing Lagos Mainland Constituency 2, at Tuesday’s plenary, the House called on the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Bashir Braimah, to appear before it over snarled traffic.
Speaking on the issue, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, observed that the state ought to device other means of transportation, such as rail and sea to ease congestion.
“We should invite the General Manager of Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to come and address us on the issue, while the newly appointed Commissioner for Transportation should be called upon to direct relevant agencies to ease the traffic situation in the state. LASTMA was established to ease traffic, and also provide jobs for people and any official of the agency that is not ready to work should be shown the way out. We have to urgently do something about this,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun, while supporting the call on LASTMA boss to appear before the House, explained that there should be zero tolerance for driving against traffic and for okada (motorcycle) riders who rode on restricted roads.
The Majority Leader Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, explained the intention of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, in changing the approach of LASTMA officials, on the way they handle traffic offenders, was fair and good.
